Carnegie Award 2023

This term, our book clubs will once again be covering the Yoto Carnegie Award-  the longest running children's book award scheme within the UK!

Both Y7 and Y8/9 clubs will be reading and discussing the titles from the award's shortlist with Mrs Swan. To give you a better idea about the Yoto Carnegies, we've included this years shortlist below with a brief synopsis of each book. While these titles are currently reserved for book club members, all students will be able to borrow them after the Yoto Carnegies have concluded.

Please speak to Mrs Swan if you are interested in joining either book club!

The Light in Everything by Katya Balen (Winner of 2022 Award with October, October)

'Tom is still quiet and timid, even though his dad has been gone for nearly two years now. Zofia is the opposite. Inside her there's a raging storm that makes her want to fight the whole world until she gets what she wants. And what she wants is for scaredy-cat Tom to get out of her life. Tom hates loud, unpredictable Zofia just as much, but he's moving into Zofia's house. Because his mum and Zofia's dad are in love ... and they're having a baby. Tom and Zofia both wish the stupid baby had never happened. But then Tom's mum gets ill, and it begins to look horribly like their wish might come true ...'

When Shadows Fall by Sita Brahmachari

'Kai, Orla and Zak grew up together, their days spent on the patch of wilderness in between their homes, a small green space in a sprawling grey city. Music, laughter and friendship bind them together and they have big plans for their future - until Kai’s family suffers a huge loss. Trying to cope with his own grief, as well as watching it tear his family apart, Kai is drawn into a more dangerous crowd, until his dreams for the future are a distant memory. Excluded from school and retreating from his loved ones, it seems as though his path is set, his story foretold. Orla, Zak and classmate Om are determined to help him find his way back. But are they too late?'

Medusa by Jessie Burton

'Exiled to a far-flung island by the whims of the gods, Medusa has little company except the snakes that adorn her head instead of hair. But when a charmed, beautiful boy called Perseus arrives on the island, her lonely existence is disrupted with the force of a supernova, unleashing desire, love, betrayal, and destiny itself.'

The Eternal Return of Clara Hart by Louise Finch

'Spence and Anthony have been friends for years, but it’s only when he witnesses a classmate die in what looks like a tragic accident at a house party that a flicker in the fabric of time helps Spence ‘see’ Anthony for the first time. When Spence wakes up to the same day again and sees Clara, the girl who died, alive and well, it’s clear he’s been granted a second chance. And a third. And a fourth…

Caught in a loop, condemned to experience the same 24 hours over and over, Spence tries to prevent the terrible events of the party. To break the spell he has to re-evaluate everything he previously took for granted and find the courage to call out his own and others complicity in events that marked the life and death of Clara Hart.'

Needle by Patrice Lawrence

'Charlene is a demon knitter. It’s the only thing she enjoys and the only thing she believes she’s really good at. So when her foster mum’s son destroys her latest creation, Charlene loses it and stabs him in the hand with her knitting needle. It damages a nerve and she gets sucked into the criminal justice system for assault. Charlene's not sorry and she’s never apologised to anyone in her life. But people keep telling her that if she says sorry, they’ll go easier on her. Can she bring herself to say it and not mean it when her freedom’s at stake?'

The Blue Book of Nebo by Manon Steffan Ros

'Dylan was six when The End came, back in 2018: when the electricity went off for good, and the normal 21st-century world he knew disappeared. Now 14, he and his mam have survived in their isolated hilltop house above the village of Nebo in north-west Wales by learning new skills and returning to old ways of living. However, despite their close understanding, the relationship between mother and son changes subtly as Dylan has to take on adult responsibilities. And they each have their own secrets - which emerge as they take it in turns to jot down their thoughts and memories in a found notebook – the Blue Book of Nebo.'

I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys

'Romania, 1989. Communist regimes are crumbling across Europe. Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but Romanians aren’t free to dream; they are bound by rules and force.

Amidst the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae CeauČ™escu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. He’s left with only two choices: betray everyone and everything he loves—or use his position to creatively undermine the most notoriously evil dictator in Eastern Europe.

Cristian risks everything to unmask the truth behind the regime, give voice to fellow Romanians, and expose to the world what is happening in his country. He eagerly joins the revolution to fight for change when the time arrives. But what is the cost of freedom?'

Spotlight on 'Massolit'

This week, the Library team would like to draw your attention to another one of our brilliant online resources. Massolit is particularly useful for GCSE and A Level students and is full of short videos relevant to secondary school curriculums. These videos are often produced by lecturers at major universities and are a great way to revise or to learn more about specific topics from experts in their field.

Massolit is accessible via the Library App. You can also find this under 'The Grey Coat Hospital', 'Library' in SharePoint if you're working at home, or pinned to your desktop if you're using a school computer.

  1. Once you have found the Library App, you now need to login to access Massolit. To do so, click 'Guest' in the top right corner of the screen and select 'Login via SSO'.
  2. This will bring you to your account which will show you all of your current library loans.
  3. Using the 'Search' bar, type in the term you are looking for. This can be a specific topic or person like 'Jane Austen' or a subject like 'English Literature'.
  4. When you search this term, the Library App will then show you all the books we have in the library on this topic.
  5. To find the Massolit videos relating to your search you must select 'One Search' from the bar on the left side of the screen. You should then see 'Massolit' as one of the top options underneath this.
  6. To login to Massolit, follow the instructions that appear on screen: open the 'Connect with Provider' page, close this new tab and then select the second button which should say 'Search'.
  7. This will show you all the Massolit videos relating to your chosen topic.

Please ask at the Library if you have any issues accessing our resources!
